Hero Spotlight: Collin M. — From Special Forces to PMP Success
At TMOG, we believe every veteran stepping into civilian life is beginning a new mission—one that requires new tools, new language, and a strong support system. That’s why we’re proud to spotlight Collin M., a retired Army veteran who turned his leadership experience into civilian project management success through PMP® certification.
From Black Beret to Business Owner
After 26 years in the Army—including roles teaching Special Forces and managing capability development projects—Collin wasn’t sure what "civilian life" would look like. But with two businesses, flexibility, and time with family, he’s now thriving. “I’m learning how to civilian,” he jokes. “And I love it.”
At the recommendation of his boss, Collin enrolled in Jon McGlothian’s PMP prep course in Southern Pines, NC—originally thinking it was just another professional development seminar. “Boy, was I surprised when I realized there was a test—and it was HARD,” he says with a laugh.
How TMOG Helped Him Succeed
Collin credits TMOG’s course structure, environment, and mentorship for helping him prepare.
“Jon’s teaching style was hands-on, visual, and interactive. You weren’t just sitting and listening—you were participating, learning from others, and building real knowledge.”
He studied for a month after class using flashcards and Jon’s curated materials—and passed the PMP on his first try.
PMP Changed the Game
Collin immediately saw new opportunities after certification. His colleagues took notice, and job offers started rolling in. Most importantly, the PMP framework gave him better tools to manage real-world challenges—like stakeholder management, scope creep, and balancing capability needs with tight budgets.
“PMP helped me apply structure to chaos. I had the leadership experience, but PMP gave me the language and the methodology to back it up.”
Collin’s Advice to Future Heroes
“The PMP is worth it. Invest in yourself and be accountable to a system. You’ll be amazed what doors open up.”
